Day trips further west to Connemara National Park, Kylemore Abbey and Scuba Dive West are guaranteed to keep both adults and children entertained, regardless of the weather. Or check out the neighbouring counties: among Mayo’s picturesque towns and villages, Westport is a must-visit for traditional music and great food, and the celebrated Croagh Patrick mountain should at least be seen if not climbed. To the south in lovely county Clare you’ll find nostalgia and fun for all the family at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, while the sheer wonder of nature in the Burren and the majestic Cliffs of Moher will take your breath away.
Galway city itself has everything you would expect form a modern cosmopolitan European city, but with a medieval twist. The very best shops, cinemas and restaurants sit alongside quaint theatres, museums, traditional pubs and cobbled streets. Galway city has a pretty working harbour which links via a quiet coastal walk to Europe’s longest seafront promenade in Salthill, where you can marvel at the beauty of Galway Bay and relax on the sandy beaches.
